Round 2 Matchups- (57) 1997 Florida vs (968) 1994 Bowling Green (456) 1997 Colorado State vs (569) 2004 Texas A&M (313) 1992 Georgia vs (712) 1982 Ohio State (200) 2005 West Virginia vs (1224) 2003 Connecticut (185) 1996 Colorado vs (840) 2004 Oregon State (328) 2008 Texas Tech vs (1352) 1984 Illinois (441) 1999 Wisconsin vs (584) 1986 Arkansas (72) 2001 Tennessee vs (953) 1980 LSU
(117) 2005 Ohio State - 35 (1932) 1986 Southern Miss - 10 QB Troy Smith shredded this poor eagle team. Watch out for these Buckeyes they are ready for prime time.
(908) 2001 Virginia Tech - 28 (1141) 1977 Army - 19 This Tech school should be around for a while as it is loaded, Army QB Leamon Hall was not Army Strong and was hasseled all day by Jake Housewright and Ronyell Whitaker had two picks. One fan took this game to another level with his car.
(396) 2002 Washington State - 28 (1653) 1993 Arkansas - 14 This Washington State team is the best one they got in the tourny and didn't disappoint. With all the names, Jason Gesser, Marcus Trufant, Jerome Riley, Mike Bush all were present in this one and that overwhelmed the Danny Ford led Backs.
(373) 1998 Penn State - 28 (1676) 1999 USC - 17 The Sophomore Carson Palmer couldn't take down the Lions and the 98-01 USC teams could be very overrated none of thoset teams were over 9 wins, with Carson Palmer. The play of this game was RB Eric McCoo and his bounce.
(885) 1988 BYU - 28 (1164) 1988 Virginia - 20 Another Ty sighting and he takes down the Sophomore Moore's(QB Shawn and RB Herman), but Herman takes this time to promote himself.
(140) 1983 Florida - 24 (1909) 1979 Texas Tech - 7 All QB Wayne Peace did was handoff to Neal Anderson and the rest was history, this was the worst team I have covered so far in the 1979 Tech Team. LB Wilbur Marshall was a beast in this one 6 sacks!
(245) 2004 California - 33 (1804) 1979 Southern Illinois - 13 Classic overmatch and Mershawn Lynch went off, but the Salukis were so happy to be included in the tournament that they just kept dancing.
(780) 1985 Miami (Ohio) - 24 (1269) 2003 Marshall - 23 A Jason Radar Touchdown cut the lead to 1 but WR George Swarn made a crucial first down and time ran out on this very average 1985 Miami OH Team, that will be fed to 2004 California
(757) 1979 Auburn - 32 (1292) 1978 California - 21 RB James Brooks broke thru for Auburn and ran for 220 and Joe Cribbs had 110 as the Tigers ran thru a very below average Cal Team.
(268) 2004 Arizona State - 29 (1781) 1986 Toledo - 17 This would have been alot worse but ASU pulled all the starters at beginning of the 4th quarter with a 29-3 lead. Two touchdowns in garbage time made the score look better then the game actually was. QB Sam Keller and Derek Hagen scored twice and DL Jimmy Verdon forced a fumble that led to a Ricardo Stewart touchdown. But the real party was in the stands in this blow out.
(501) 1978 Maryland - 22 (1548) 1978 McNeese State - 16 A late one yard score by RB Steve Atkins was the difference in this one. But at least McNeese pushed their way into the tourny.
(524) 2006 Boston College - 28 (1525) 1980 North Texas - 17 The two headed monster of TB Andre Callender and LV Whitworth, and on the other side Mathius Kiwanuka had 10 tackles 5 tfl's and 1 forced fumble. Also LB Brian Toal had two picks and this game was for the seniors, but at least UNT stood up Fo One!
(1013) 1996 Texas - 26 (1036) 1977 UCLA - 23 A late Phil Dawson FG preserves the win for QB James Brown and Ricky Williams, despite a late run to the 20 yard line by UCLA RB Theotis Brown. Even a home movie of UCLA(zapruder would be proud) couldn't erase the highlight here that is what makes this team by far THE TEAM I HATE THE MOST IN THIS TOURNAMENT FOR THIS PLAY ALONE. Thank you for making me re-live this tramatic time in my life and 5 years of therapy down the drain.
(12) 1989 Notre Dame - 32 (2037) 1982 Toledo - 9 I really like this Fighting Irish team lead by Tony Rice, Ricky Watters and The Rocket and with a defense of Chris Zorich and Todd Lyght on the Defense, Toledo had no chance, some of the Rockets players referred to this Irish team as a "Blackhawk helicopter landing on campus, they came in blew us away and left."
Round 2 Matchups: (117) 2005 Ohio State vs (908) 2001 Virginia Tech (396) 2002 Washington State vs (629) 1986 San Jose State (373) 1998 Penn State vs (652) 1981 Yale (140) 1983 Florida vs (885) 1988 BYU (245) 2004 California vs (780) 1985 Miami, Ohio (268) 2004 Arizona State vs (757) 1979 Auburn (501) 1978 Maryland vs (524) 2006 Boston College (12) 1989 Notre Dame vs (1013) 1996 Texas
(631) 2000 Iowa State - 21 (1418) 1990 Central Michigan - 22 An experienced Chippewa team pulled off the biggest upset of the tournament. Not only did a 1400+ seed advance, but the best Iowa State team in the field just got knocked out. Iowa State has lost their top two teams already, and are in danger of being entirely eliminated from the tournament in the first round.
(906) 1994 Boston College - 20 (1143) 1996 Texas Tech - 17
(119) 1984 Florida - 31 (1930) 1986 Air Force - 13
Round 2 Matchups- (10) 2004 USC vs (1034) 1994 Mississippi State (503) 1998 Virginia vs (522) 1992 Washington State (266) 1979 Nebraska vs (759) 1995 Virginia (247) 1995 Kansas vs (778) 1980 Central Michigan (138) 1984 BYU vs (1162) 1984 Arizona (375) 1990 Florida vs (650) 1979 Yale (394) 1985 Auburn vs (1418) 1990 Central Michigan (119) 1984 Florida vs (906) 1994 Boston College
(42) 2004 Texas - 35 (2007) 1980 Brown - 14 Mack Brown vs Brown. Vince Young came into this tournament with all the hype (his 2005 Texas team is one of the favorites to win it all), but it was Derrick Johnson and the Longhorn defense taking center stage in this first round win. Brown only managed 123 total yards in the first three quarters, their two touchdowns coming on a John Woodring interception return for TD and a garbage time TD pass to TE Steve Jordan.
(983) 1982 Air Force - 25 (1066) 1983 North Carolina - 29 The undersized Air Force defense ended up being too much of an achilles heel for Ken Hatfield's offense to overcome. RBs Tyrone Anthony and Ethan Horton controlled the game from start to finish for the '83 Tar Heels. Perhaps this motivational message from hoops star Michael Jordan provided the inspiration.
(554) 1982 Maryland - 30 (1495) 1982 Hawaii - 16 Maryland head coach Bobby Ross decided to lean on RB Willie Joyner in this first round matchup against Dick Tomey and Hawaii, choosing to save Boomer Esiason's arm for the next round.
(471) 1998 Nebraska - 28 (1578) 1987 Rutgers - 11 The Nebraska defense ran the show today, dominating a Rutgers team that averaged only 15 points per game in 1987. DEs Mike Rucker and Chad Kelsay controlled the line of scrimmage and limited Rutgers RB Henry Henderson to 42 rushing yards.
(298) 2002 Alabama - 31 (1751) 2005 Miami (Ohio) - 18 Dennis Franchione's Crimson Tide rolls in this one, thanks to a loaded defense being able to contain the potent Miami (Ohio) passing attack. Ryne Robinson's exhilirating punt return for a TD in the second quarter was the Redhawks high point. Shaud Williams answered with an 80 yard TD run on the ensuing possession.
(727) 1979 Tennessee-Chattanooga - 27 (1322) 1980 North Carolina State - 19 Chattanooga head coach Joe Morrison got the better of NC State head man Monte Kiffin in this battle. RB Gwain Durden led the way for UTC with 93 yards and a touchdown.
(810) 1994 Virginia Tech - 23 (1239) 1993 Virginia - 21 Before Michael Vick, there was a QB named Maurice DeShazor in Blacksburg. DeShazor led a remarkable drive and found Antonio Freeman in the end zone to give the Hokies the lead with just over two minutes remianing. Then Cornell Brown and Waverly Jackson held Virginia RB Terry Kirby on fourth down to secure the win.
(215) 2008 Alabama - 30 (1834) 1981 Rutgers - 7 Walter Seward has seen plenty of Rutgers losses in his time, so this result probably didn't surprise him too much. NT Terrence Cody dominated the line of scrimmage by himself.
(170) 1984 Washington - 30 (1879) 1977 Southern Miss - 10 QB Hugh Millen led one of the best Washington teams in the field to an easy first round victory over Bobby Collins and the Golden Eagles.
(855) 1997 Marshall - 31 (1194) 2004 Florida - 27 In one of the best games of the first round so far, Marshall and Florida combined for over 1,100 yards of offense. WRs O.J. Small, Andre Caldwell, and Randy Moss traded big plays throughout the game, but it was RB Doug Chapman who scored the game winning touchdown on a draw play.
(682) 1989 Pittsburgh - 29 (1367) 1990 Stanford - 21 Dennis Green's Cardinal didn't have as much luck against Pitt as they did against Notre Dame in 1990. Pitt's "Swervin" Curvin Richards gouged the Stanford defense for 147 yards and 3 touchdowns on the ground in a win that was more convincing than the final score indicated.
(343) 2003 Michigan - 28 (1706) 1981 Notre Dame - 15 Michigan's passing game was too much for Lou Holtz's secondary today. Braylon Edwards and Jason Avant ran by DBs Rod Bone and Davel Duerson all day long. Next!
(426) 1997 Washington - 37 (1623) 2006 Purdue - 19 Ja'Warren Hooker set the tone early by returning the opening kickoff for a TD. Brock Huard, Jerome Pathon, and the rest of the Husky offense had no trouble moving the ball on a bad Purdue defense. The first of three Curtis Painter-led Purdue teams bites the dust.
(599) 1988 LSU - 24 (1450) 2004 Arkansas - 21 Arkansas QB Matt Jones almost single-handedly pulled off the upset, accounting for over 300 yards of total offense. His 72 yard TD run in the second quarter gave the Razorbacks a 21-0 lead and seemingly a slam dunk victory, but the defense couldn't hold the lead. LSU LBs Verge Ausberry and Oliver Lawrence tightened the screws on defense and got the ball back for QB Tom Hodson to lead this final game winning TD drive.
(938) 1985 Michigan State - 19 (1111) 1995 Clemson - 20 Clemson pulls off another tournament upset thanks to the play of Brian Dawkins, Anthony Simmons and the Tiger defense. MSU RB Lorenzo White was held in check.
(87) 1983 Nebraska - 52 (1962) 2007 Houston - 19 The 2007 Houston Cougars didn't stand a chance against one of the best offenses of all time. The triplets, Turner Gill, Mike Rozier, and Irving Fryar scored at will. Look out for the "Scoring Explosion", they could go a long way in this tournament.
Round 2 Matchups- (42) 2004 Texas vs (1066) 1983 North Carolina (471) 1998 Nebraska vs (554) 1982 Maryland (298) 2002 Alabama vs (727) 1979 Tennessee-Chattanooga (215) 2008 Alabama vs (810) 1994 Virginia Tech (170) 1984 Washington vs (855) 1997 Marshall (343) 2003 Michigan vs (682) 1989 Pittsburgh (426) 1997 Washington vs (599) 1988 LSU (87) 1983 Nebraska vs (1111) 1995 Clemson
Round 2 Matchups- (70) 2002 Miami vs (1094) 2003 Texas Tech (443) 1998 Georgia vs (582) 1982 Alabama (326) 2008 Penn State vs (699) 2002 West Virginia (187) 1977 Pittsburgh vs (838) 1980 Long Beach State (198) 1979 Florida State vs (827) 1987 Michigan (315) 1998 Air Force vs (710) 1987 San Jose State (454) 1979 Washington vs (571) 1989 Washington (59) 1988 Florida State vs (1083) 1998 Central Florida
(98) 1999 Michigan - 33 (1951) 1980 Wyoming - 18 This 1999 team will be ready for this tourny as Tom Brady, David Terrell and Marquise Walker throttled the overmatched Cowpokes.
(927) 1996 Rice - 19 (1122) 1990 Alabama - 23 This was a lot closer then the experts thought as Rice played them tough all game and late interception by George Teague locked the game and Bama escapes the first round.
(610) 1983 Alabama - 31 (1439) 1995 Oklahoma - 17 The second Alabama Team in this bracket continued Bama's winning ways as they dismantled a below average OU squad, to believe OU was this bad at one point is incredible. LB Cornelius Bennett was a disruption all day and OU QB Eric Moore had no answers.
(415) 1978 Arkansas - 27 (1634) 1982 Tennessee - 14 The Razorbacks gave it all they got it this one but a Willie Gault led volunteer team couldn't do anything offensively against DT Dan Hampton and the Backs. This star studded Tennessee defense was very lackluster even with the likes of Dl Reggie White, DL Mike Cofer, and DB Bill Bates was run over all day.
(354) 1994 Utah - 39 (1695) 1999 Arizona - 18 QB Mike McCoy and Kevin Dyson were the story here as they hook up for 210 yards and 3 TD's. But 1999 Wildcat QB Ortege Jenkins and RB Trung Candidate couldn't repeat the magic of the 1998 team. But this team was a shell of that 12-1 team. Utes roll.
(671) 1989 BYU - 38 (1378) 1997 Rice - 27 Another Rice team in the tournament another loss. Ty Detmer hooked up with Andy Boyce two times and RB Matt Belini and the running game paved by OG Mohammed Elewonibi were too much for the Owls.
(866) 1997 Arizona - 24 (1183) 1991 Kansas State - 23 In a nail biter it took a Dennis Northcutt Punt return to win this one in the 4th quarter with 2 minutes left. The great Elijah Alexander forced a fumble late and got two sacks and took the post game interview to promote his charity.
(159) 1978 Notre Dame - 22 (1890) 1977 Jackson State - 13 Joe Montana yawned in this one and spent the after halftime on the sideline pining to his future endorsement deals. HB Vegas Ferguson rushed for 120 and 2 TD's, and the 1977 Jackson State steps out of the tourny.
(226) 1986 Michigan - 33 (1823) 1989 East Carolina - 16 Big Bo leads one of his best teams in the Tourny and QB Jim Harbaugh and WR Greg McMurtry were the story hooking up 9 times for 170 and 3 TD's. This will be a team to be reckoned with.
(799) 1982 BYU - 28 (1250) 2007 Rutgers - 23 QB Steve Young won one for the emblem and secured the victory for the Cougs against a very polished and possibly Greg Schiano's and the Schools best Rutgers history. Despite one big run by Ray Rice, he was bottled up DB Blake Jensen and Cougar D. The score looks better then the game was.
(738) 1989 Arizona - 19 (1311) 1980 Drake - 18 1980 Drake team played hard for its seniors and almost pulled of one of the biggest upsets of the tournament so far, but a tipped pass by LB Chris Singleton that lead to a pick by DB Daryll Lewis stopped the last minute drive by The Drake.
(287) 1991 Notre Dame - 35 (1762) 1986 Iowa State - 17 The contributers on this team are staggering, QB Rick Mirer, TB Rodney Culver, RB Jerome Bettis(our first bus sighting), WR Lake Dawson and that is just on the offensive side of the ball, none of these players saw any time in the second half. LB Demetrius Debose desposed of the cyclones despite the Power Cheer.
(482) 2001 Louisville - 27 (1567) 1999 Auburn - 16 This Louisville team will surprise some teams, with the great Dave Ragone-Deion Branch connection in full effect in this one. But at least we have another Aubie sighting that is more inspiring then the play by the FB Heath Evans led Tigers.
(543) 2001 Fresno State - 32 (1506) 1977 Eastern Michigan - 20 David Carr, Benard Berrian, Rodney Wright all had the eye of the tiger in this one.
(994) 2008 Wake Forest - 22 (1055) 2006 Central Michigan - 23 Jim Grobe couldn't keep the highly touted Defense of Wake Forest with Aaron Curry and Alphonso Smith read too much of their own press clippings and with 32 seconds to go QB Dan Lefevour hit Ontario Sneed with a 41 yard screen to set up the winning FG by Rick Albreski to get the upset.
(31) 2008 Texas - 44 (2018) 2001 Kent State - 12 QB Freshman Joshua Cribbs was bottled up by Orakpo and Co. and Colt McCoy wasn't even breathed on in this one.
Round 2 Matchups: (98) 1999 Michigan vs (1122) 1990 Alabama (415) 1978 Arkansas vs (610) 1983 Alabama (354) 1994 Utah vs (671) 1989 BYU (159) 1978 Notre Dame vs (866) 1997 Arizona (226) 1986 Michigan vs (799) 1982 BYU (287) 1991 Notre Dame vs (738) 1989 Arizona (482) 2001 Louisville vs (543) 2001 Fresno State (31) 2008 Texas vs (1055) 2006 Central Michigan
